Colonia Solana House
Tucson, Arizona
Located in a National Register Historic District, the biggest challenges of this green renovation in a desert community were the uninsulated adobe walls, retained for their architectural appeal, and the low ceilings. In the 40' open living area, the roof was raised to make space for windows above an existing veranda roof, creating a high, clear volume filled with north light. The building envelope was improved to compensate for the adobe walls. The result was dramatically improved energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and clarity.
