Our client owned a parcel of rolling land that was formerly used to grow tobacco. He wanted a small, energy-efficient house set carefully into the tree-studded landscape. The forms of the new house echo the proportions and textures of an old wooden tobacco-drying barn still on the property. Downstairs are living spaces and a guest room; the master bedroom and study are upstairs. High ceilings, abundant light, and multiple views of the rolling terrain make the house feel larger than its 1,216 square feet.
